Calling Old Orchard Residents

I have met with the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo to plan for a piece of art in Old Orchard. My goal is to use money already appropriated plus matching dollars for a nice, but simple piece or series of pieces in the district.

I am looking for Old Orchard residents who are interested in determining the look of the art piece and its placement. Please contact JoAnne in my office at 245-1050 if you are interested in working with me and the arts community.

Thanks, Dave

I've been hearing great stories of neighbors helping neighbors. From time to time, I'd like to highlight their good works, although I know that is not the desire of the good samaritans.

Nonetheless, Dave Spencer on Rushland edited the new refuse pick up calendars, printed the calendars, then distributed them to neighbors on Rushland. Dave is often seen snow blowing his neighbors' sidewalks too, but the calendar printing went above and beyond.

Tell A Neighbor

If you know of someone in District 5 (west Toledo) who isn't getting a behind-the-scenes look at how their tax dollar is being spent, sign them up for this newsletter. Click on the "Forward to a Friend" link above. If I can help you with anything or if you have a comment, please call my office at 245-1050.

Snow Plowing

I have received many emails regarding the snow plowing. Most, I am happy to say, have been complimentary of the work done. This has been a challenging winter to say the least.

The city uses, on average, 33,000 tons of salt a year. They had 47,000 tons on hand at the start of the season due to good planning by the department. Dave Welch and his crew are to be commended.

There are still some areas of District 5 where the leaf pick-up has not been completed, and that has made for a snowy, messy, mix.

Garbage Changes

By now you've experienced the "rotating" refuse pick up. It will take some getting used to. The reason for the new scheduling is to eliminate Saturday pick ups after holidays. The city is trying to save overtime costs by eliminating the Saturday pick ups. I will be sending out an easy-to-follow refuse calendar very soon, so please watch your mail box for the calendar. My goal is to send a calendar to every home in my district. Thanks to the generosity of Marco's, Columbia Gas, The University of Toledo, and ProMedica for making it possible for me to produce and mail these calendars.

Important News for Columbia Gas Customers

Natural gas customers in the Douglas and Ledyard area will
benefit from Columbia Gas of Ohio’s $2 billion pipeline improvement
program.

Approximately 800 customers living on 21 streets bounded by Central
Avenue, Aldringham Road, Monroe Street, Bellevue Road, Groveland Road and
Drummond Road will be impacted starting next month.

The work will require a temporary interruption of natural gas
service. Customers will be contacted via letter in advance of the scheduled
work. Columbia Gas will make personal contact with customers prior to
shutting off service and to schedule re-light appointments.

District Notes

Armory Sale: The city has received an offer to purchase the old Armory on Secor north of Sylvania. Details on the purchase price are still being worked out.

Rat Patrol: The health department is adding another rodent officer. He started this month. The addition is due to a grant the department received.

Getting Ovar It: The gynecological cancer support group meets the third Thursday of every month from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Flower Hospital Hickman Cancer Center.
